Title: Introduction to R
Abstract: R is described by its creators as “a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics.” In addition to having the built in capabilities, both computational and graphical, to perform common statistical analyses, the versatility and extensibility of R make it the choice for implementation of cutting-edge statistical methods in areas such as bioinformatics (via the Bioconductor project), spatial statistics (via the Rgeo project), financial analysis (via the Rmetric project), etc. R is free software, and has significant similarities with the S language, which forms the basis for the commercial software S-Plus.
This workshop will introduce participants to R, giving both a general overview of R and specific skills that are fundamental for R users. Topics will include
The workshop will emphasize hands-on experience rather than lecture.
Events
This workshop will focus on applied Bayesian regression models that accommodate spatial and temporal associations. Event Link
Functions in R allow users to automate commonly used procedures and to implement new methods. Even for those who rarely need this functionality, understanding R functions and programming is quite useful, since R is built around functions. Event Link
News & Announcements
CSTAT has an open slot for a Specialist; we intend to fill it with someone who has the skills of a Senior Biostatistician. The Specialist will work with the Director and Associate Director to carry out CSTAT’s mission and will provide statistical consulting services directly to our clients. This includes: assisting with grant development and sponsored research; serving as the statistician on projects; preparing bids (cost estimates); offering clients resources and advice on research design and statistical methods; explaining concepts, methods, and how to run or interpret statistical analyses. A course on the topic of "Research Synthesis and Meta-analysis" will be offered during the fall 2013 semester. Please see below for more information regarding this course. Course name: CEP 982Instructor: Dr. Spyros KonstantopoulosShort Description: "Research synthesis and meta-analysis have become very popular in a wide variety of research disciplines that include psychology, education, medicine, ecology, and business. The objectives of this course are several, but the primary focus is to conduct a research synthesis (using meta-analytic methods) in whatever substantive area interests you the most." To sign up for this course, please follow MSU's standard procedure for course registration.
